ARLINGTON, Texas - A dog owner claims an Arlington police officer overreacted and shot his dog five times as his children watched.

Buck Yandle said two police officers and an animal control officer showed up at his home on Lake Jackson Drive last week. They were there about his dog Bucky, a basset hound and Rottweiler mix.

Neighbors said Bucky nipped a boy in the back after school. The dog never bit him, but it was enough to scare the 10-year-old.

Yandle stepped outside to meet with the officers. He said he closed the door and left his four children inside the house with Bucky. But the dog ran out because his 3-year-old son opened the door.

Bucky got agitated as police were talking to Yandle. Although he insists the dog did not lunge at or attack any of the officers, one of the officers shot and killed him.

"He's barking and dancing around," he said. "He shot pop, pop. The dog was down then pop, pop, pop. I said, 'Man, you just shot my dog.' And he said, 'You [expletive] idiot. You let your dog out.'"

Yandle said the shooting happened with his toddler nearby. The rest of his children were watching from their living room window.

His wife, who had been running errands at the time, raced home when she heard what happened.

"I don't understand why he did it. I don't understand why he shot my dog five times in front of my children," said Natalie Yandle.

Arlington police would not comment on the case. The officer's use of deadly force is under investigation by internal affairs, but that is routine.

The Yandle family has created a Facebook page called Justice for Bucky :

  • @CybellaN Continuing with my comment. Instead of cooling off they called the authorities who should of only spoken with both families instead the cop took it upon himself to completely destroy a family. Those poor kids are the biggest victims forever having to watch their beloved pet shot before their eyes when they try to sleep at night. The only good part of this is now we know that officer cannot handle a weapon and hopefully will be removed before he shoots another animal or worse a person

  • @doctadeath2020 Wow you really didn't pay attention at all just sat their in your bias opinion assuming. The dog was reacting to the fear of the children and never did he leap in a threatening manner only barking. As well the claim that the dog was menacing was at best shaky as the 'witness' couldn't decide whether the dog growled or bit the nephew. It was a neighbor on neighbor argument probably gone terribly wrong.

  • Under investigation, shit aint gonna happen. This is the people we pay to serve and protect us, oh and if they don't like your dog, thats apparently grounds to kill them.

  • @ckhuggins I'm sorry, but a fucking basset hound mix isn't going to seriously wound anyone. So fuck off.

  • Show a picture of the dog as a puppy? Really? This is misleading. The dog that was shot was a full grown dog that had chased a kid and charged a cop. It's better off dead.

  • oh my god cry me a river! Just keep your dog under control =/ and why were kids watching adults fighting anyways? sheesh.

  • @skirts365 There was a case from Texas years ago about a family named the Leathermans, cops massacred their 2 dogs, news accounts said afterwards the cops stood in front yard for a while "laughing, joking, enjoying their seemingly limitless power," it was in the Fort Worth Star Telegram, became a court case, I think the courts let the butchers off, the "fix" is in and it doesn't help fairplay that there are so many police chiefs, judges & grand jurors who are MASONS!!! BEWARE VETERINARIANS TOO!

  • News accounts of such actions by cops go far back before the Internet; see the New York Times index. Men become cops because they're bullies on a power trip--it's the main draw into police work. They lobby for special treatment, destroy videos if they see someone taping them, investigate & acquit each other. "You're not a real cop till you shoot & kill," a dog is runner up consolation prize. They're supposed to use minimum force; the shooting was necessary ONLY for the cruelty of this 666er.

  • I'm a postman. Dogs hate me. He was just a coward.
