A tongue-in-cheek look at the history and future of the BSD movement. Modeled after the presentation styles of Lessig and Hardt, the talk provides a light-hearted introspection of the leaders, technologies, and community that forges ahead despite having been left for dead some 15 years past. This presentation was given by Jason Dixon at the NYC BSD Conference at Columbia University on October 28, 2006

  • @MrIntosh AND ATI driver because the open source radeon driver sucks.

  • BSDISAWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Linux is smoking blob. When I run Linux, I make sure I run all open source software(EXCEPT my wifi driver)

  • BSD rocks but there are too few drivers in every version I have tried for my server needs.

  • @moodyoldmoo

    Eh? You complain BSD is fragmented and then hold up Linux as an example of unity. Quite frankly, if you're unsure about which one to run, just run the one which is best suited to your needs, which is probably PC-BSD.

  • The problem I find with BSD is that there are so many variants of it, if they were all distros like Linux then I wouldn't mind but it seems too fragmented with all the variant. I think a merger of the BSD's would really help.

    This really exemplifies the difference between the GNU/GPL/Linux people and BSD. For the GNU and Linux people, its all about killing proprietary software, a big philosophical battle not everyone in free software even agrees with whereas BSD is about good software that gets used in as many ways as possible.

  • BSD isn't fighting a battle against Microsoft and Apple, thats half the point. Apple contributes to the FreeBSD project, a bit of BSD is in Windows. And the world is better for it.

    If BSD is fighting a battle, its with Linux.

  • You guys hate Linux just because they are better and more users than you? Don't be a bunch of losers and get up. We are both fighting the same battle against Microsoft and Apple, just don't be a back stabber and bind together.

  • @fuzzyping I have no problem ripping on FreeBSD for wanting to be Linux.

    Wrong way around sir,

    Linux = Unix-like

    FreeBSD = Unix

    Therefore Linux wants to be like FreeBSD :)
