  • @outrider52 you have a point. But what do expect from academics (lol)? It does not detract from Stevens BTW I have spoken with neo confederates--who hate Stevens. I think they are mistaken. Stevens did not HATE the south--he did hate the Planter class and was concerned for poor southern white folk. Personally I think the South is less racist than the north.

  • I must disagree with Prof. Kennedy about Schindler--he did NOT profit off of slave labor and died in relative poverty--the film made about him does not mention that he left guns for his "slave labor" to defend themselves against the Germans.

I have written to Yad Vashem to inquire why he has not been honored--no reply.

With respect many of the Boston abolitionists were racists--one might recall what the black section of Beacon Hill was called.

But on the whole splendid talk!

  • @vivascargill Stevens was unfortunately depicted as a villian in this country because he spoke out against SLAVERY

  • Thaddeus Stevens Lydia Hamilton overlooked heroes

  • uh uh uh and uh uh uh

  • Thoams Jefferson called slavery an "abomination". He opposed slavery but failed to free his slaves. Why? Because doing so would had made it impossable to pay of his debts. Thaddeous Stevens may had good intentions but the reason so many Republicans sided with him was to reduce Democratic power in the southern states. By freeing slaves they gave they overturned the 3/5 compromise, giving the south extra reprensentation. This was unnaceptable to northern Republicans. No slave would vote for a Dem.

  • Too bad they had a Q & A session

  • A fine talk, Professor. I look forward to your book.

I hope, when the Stevens & Smith History center opens we'll both be in attendance.

  • Well done, Professor.

  • I have an idea for a talk... I call it "Good Black People". In it, I'm going to cherry pick in history those black people who meet my contemporary eye. This professor is full of himself and I cannot stand his voice.
