Yes, more and less carbon was released into the atmosphere depending on what was going on. The problem now is, the amount human added therefore changing it beyond the natural cycle. People are taking carbon (fossil fuels) that has been out of the cycle for millions of years, and adding it back to the cycle, while also getting rid of trees and destroying the ocean which absorb it.
