Open Innovation in Services
CITRIS Distinguished Speaker: Steve Wright from BT
Steve Wright, the Head of Strategic Research at BT, will speak at CITRIS.
Abstract:

Over the last few years, BT has been transforming its business from a telco to a networked service provider, based on "new wave" revenues. BT's 21st Century Network (21CN) is an important part of that transition. It is an end-to-end IP-based network, which will consolidate BT's complex networks and systems on to a single infrastructure. But it is not simply a network transformation; rather it is a radical overhaul of products, systems, process and a fundamental remaking of our business around the delivery of software defined services. In particular, it will enable the creation of new converged communications and information services -- by BT, third parties and our customers. 21CN is a platform for open innovation in communications services.

For a telco, this is a major transformation, particularly for the people at the heart of the systems and processes. Of course, this change is taking place in the context of developments in internet and web services and businesses that are at least as considerable and significant, particularly for BT's transformed businesses, so it would be brave to predict BT's future trajectory. Even so, we discuss some initiatives and developments that we believe will be important for this trajectory.

Dr. Wright's research focus has moved (with the focus of the industry) from materials and devices, through protocols and systems to services and solutions. He was also the founding Director of the HP Internet Research Institute.
