that's really loud. can you hear it while your within distance of it, say 5 feet?

I have one of these machines and I love it. At first, I thought the smell was horrid, but I've gotten used to it (it only smells if you keep the lid open too long, otherwise, it only noticeable for a couple of minutes.

baking soda is supposed to help with the smell :)

We have two of these composters, and they don't smell, because we keep a perfect balance of saw dust and food scraps. We periodically go to the local lumber yard, and were they allow anyone to take free bags of saw dust.

@dherrera3 paper shreddings also work well - just be careful not to shred any plastic envelope windows or other stuff.

Yes, paper shreddings have worked well for us too. I also wanted to update my last posting about saw dust from the local lumber mill. Recently the saw mill operator advised us that saw dust might be contaminated with pressure treated wood saw dust, and never to use saw dust. He said that we should only use wood shavings, because pressure treated wood is never shaved. Therefore, wood shavings are almost guaranteed not to be contaminated.
