"Wudaokou vendors pack up for the night
but they'll be back tomorrow, stronger."
A Thursday evening in Beijing's Wudaokou district leaves a street-side packed with people walking and vendors hawking - t-shirts, earrings, stuffed animals, shoes, cell phone batteries, art, endless street food, and more. A police car idled through the crowd and vendors casually packed up their goods and disappeared into the night. The scene looked to be more of a public act than that of an enforcement of anti-peddling laws. While there must be a fine of some sort for those "caught", it was a most relaxed scattering of an *illegal* event. Each day and every night, vendors bring life to the pavement and peddle - and every so often, the police meddle...
