The bulk of the major policy action took place Friday, September 25th at the David L. Lawrence Convention Center in Pittsburgh, Pa.
U.S. President Obama, Nicolas Sarkozy and British Prime Minister Gordon Brown spoke during a joint press conference in the morning before official meetings began. The three leaders joined forced to denounce the recent revelation of a second nuclear processing plant in Iran.
Following the official meeting, various leaders held press briefings. President Obama pledged that any option, including military, would be left on the table when considering how best to confront the Nuclear Iran threat. What is less clear is the commitment China and Russia will play in tackling the Iranian problem. Russia has been reserved in their communications with Tehran, claiming that it is within the country's sovereign rights to produce industrial nuclear facilities for civilian use. However, the latest intelligence sheds light on Iran's true aims: nuclear arms. It will be interesting to see how Moscow reacts after the Obama Administration's recent announcement to discontinue production of a missile shield system in Eastern Europe, which the Russians hotly contested.
On a lighter note, most world leaders congratulated the City of Pittsburgh for its economic and environmental transformation in the previous generation and complimented the city's residents, businesses and architecture. Hockey fans could appreciate Canadian Prime Minister Steven Harper's comments about the Pittsburgh Penguins. Interesting to note is the way Harper, a fluent French Speaker, pronounces the word, "Duquesne."
