On March 24, 2009, Operation Patient Access held a panel discussion on Capitol Hill to focus on critical surgical access issues. Maggie Elehwany explained that general surgeons are often the cornerstone of a local hospital, and the lack of these surgeons adversely affects the hospital and in turn the local economy, as hospitals are typically one of the largest local employers in rural communities. Elehwany is vice president of Government Affairs and Policy at the National Rural Health Association (NRHA), which works to improve rural health care access and reduce hospital closures.
