The story starts a year or so after the death of Sir Bowen, a knight of the old code. In the last year of his life, he visited the cave-home of his long-dead friend Draco, and was then blessed with the gift of a dragon egg, which, at the time, contained Drake (voiced by Benson). He took the egg to a monastery, which is the home of his friend, the monk (and failed poet) Brother Gilbert. The friars at the monastery pledged to hide the dragon away, with Brother Gilbert protecting him and teaching him. Later, when Brother Gilbert dies, the task of taking care of Drake is passed to a young and gullible friar.
