  • I got a Sentry 4300, trying to see how resistant these things are.

  • They are ok in a short house fire. This safe has a 30 min UL fire rating so you can be confident that your papers (such as birth certificates or money) in this safe will stay below 350 degrees. But on UL's website it tells you that they do not guarantee that your papers will still be legible. This is not good for any plastic type papers or heat sensitive items. Hope this helps.

  • do they expose it to extreme uniform flames from start to end?

  • Yes. UL is the most realistic and toughest fire test. If your safe is not exposed to the full force of the fire it will be just fine. I tend to deal with customers with houses over 30 minutes away from any fire department. So I tend to deal with safes in the 1 to 2 hour fire ratings.

  • survival of the fittest

  • what you can do for your flash usb drives that you have important documents on like gun inventory lists, account numbers & priceless sentimental photos, etc... is to put the flash drives in a glass lined thermos then place it inside your safe. that way it will still be good after the fire

  • Use the right tool for the job. Media like DVDs or CDs go in media rated fire safes. Those are rated to internal temperatures no higher than 125F.

  • That would not bode well for people archiving data on DVDs or CDs.
