In this tutorial we look at creating a btrfs striped volume in openSUSE 11.3 and then, to show the dynamic nature of BTRFS file-systems, I will add a third drive to the mounted raid array and show that new disk adds immediately to the mounted volume

  • I love BTRFS so far, especially it's multi-disk handling. Though the only gripe I have is that if the device in /dev changes, the array cannot be mounted. There may be a way to fix this, but not so sure.

  • I think you should have used the btrfs command since btrfs-vol and others are obsolete. Also I think you should have mentioned that the -m switch is for metadata and that you can have different raid levels for medadata and data. Otherwise it was a fine tutorial. Can you add (and more importantly) remove a disk from the pool while the volume is in full use? (for example running a md5 sum of some data on the volume).

    Keep up the good work!
