It depends how it's done. It's relatively recently that hanging was made more humane by dropping the condemned from a height or through a trap door so the neck would break and death would be quick. Traditionally you were just strung up and left to strangle, sometimes for minutes. That's why historically nobles would be beheaded as a privilege of rank while commoners slowly choked to death. As hans points out, the Iranians still do that - they hoist you up with a crane, in front of a crowd!

@megothier The point was always asphyxiation, however the condemned would be unconscious for this as the drop and abrupt end broke the neck and caused a lose of consciousness. For around 10% of hangings, the C1 vertabrae was broken, which caused immediate death - although the chances of this happening were unlikely.

The point of hanging is to execute someone...Some where strangulated on purpose to extend the agony..and then some didn't know how to make the noose knot...;-)

the point of hanging was not strangulation, but to break the neck instantly... they need to work on that :)
