Gray-Layer, Oil Painting Techniques also known as the "Dead Layer" The gray-layer, in oil painting techniques. This is also called the dead layer, because, well, it looks dead. No color. Life comes to the painting after this layer with the color layers. But for now, you will establish all of your shadowing in greater detail, your half tones, and the modeling of each object in the painting. You should spend your most efforts and time in this layer. You get this layer right, and the rest will fall like water off the roof. Smooth! and easy!
Lets start with your dead layer color mixture. The photo below shows how to mix your black. Using 2 parts black, 1 part burnt umber(for drying enhancement) and 1/8 part ultramarine blue (for deepening your black). The rest is in the video!

  • I appreciate you showing your gray pallet technique. I'm glad you did an audio to accompany your video because your typed in instructions were obstructed by your web address several times and made it hard to read. Thank you for taking the mystery out of the mixed black, greys and warming up the gray pallet, this is a big help. take care

  • Demus, Hi. Im Ron Phelps and wondered if we might be related somewhere down the line....I also enjoy oil painting, have put it aside for the past several years but beginning again though I started with a few watercolors to do something different...realized i prefer the oils as I always did. Was just curious about you...thanks...I live in OKC, born in KC MO but my dad was born in Indiana.

  • Many thanks for proceding from begin to end.....it was very helpful!

  • What do you use the darkest gray for? If you're glazing, you should keep the dead layer base lighter.

  • No sound.
