Duncan Stewart, Director of Research for Deloitte's Technology, Media & Telecommunications practice, delivers one of Deloitte Canada's 2012 TMT Predictions regarding the future of big data at the launch of the roadshow on January 17 at The Sony Centre for Performing Arts in Toronto.

Following a short presentation from his colleagues on social gaming, Duncan introduces Deloitte's prediction for big data. Using Zynga's popular (50 million players per day) social game, CastleVille, as an example, Duncan shares with the audience that Deloitte anticipates big data to grow well over 1,000% in a two-year period, to about $1.5 billion this year. He uses the analogy of a water bottle to make his point -- it takes maybe two terabytes tops to keep track of a billion bottles of water. With a social game like CastleVille, you need to look at everything from page views and click paths, to the game's battles, and levels, to the number of invites and gifts, all of which takes five terabytes or more. Traditional analytics tools just can't keep up with this amount of information being collected.

Duncan reveals that Deloitte expects that by the end of 2012, more than 90 percent of Fortune 500 companies will have some big-data initiatives underway in an attempt to manage their overflowing data warehouses.

And, although we're still in the early days of this market, Duncan closes by telling the audience to keep their eyes on big data, since it's "not hype, it's real."
