SEN. OBAMA: Well, we may not always have national security
issues at stake, but we have moral issues stake. I mean, if -- if --
if we could have intervened effectively in the Holocaust, who among us
would say that we had a moral obligation not to go in? If we could
have stopped Rwanda, surely if we had the ability that would be
something that we would have to strongly consider and act.
So you know, when genocide is happening, when ethnic cleansing is
happening somewhere around the world, and we stand idly by, that
diminishes us. And so I do believe that we have to consider as part
of our interest, our national interest, in intervening where possible.
But understand that there's a lot of cruelty around the world.
We're not going to be able to be everywhere all the time. That's why
it's so important for us to be able to work in concert with our
allies.
Let's take the example of Darfur just for a moment. Right now
there is a peacekeeping force that has been set up and we have African
Union troops in Darfur to stop a genocide that has killed hundreds of
thousands of people. We could be providing logistical support,
setting up a no-fly zone, at relatively little cost to us, but we can
only do it if we can help mobilize the international community and
lead.

And that's what I intend to do when I'm president.

MR. BROKAW: Senator McCain, the McCain doctrine, if you will.

SEN. MCCAIN: Well, let me just follow up, my friends. If we had
done what Senator Obama wanted done in Iraq, and that was set a date
for withdrawal, which General Petraeus and our chief of -- chairman

  • Those who despise jews for using the holocaust yarn to extort reparations, shake down corporations and control USA foreign policy should try being from Poland. The jews invented the holocaust lie and turned my parents home country into a "house of horrors". When the world hears "Poland" they think of jews being gassed and it is all deception. The jews are far too heartless to even care how they stained Poland's history. Only the Palestinians can truly understand our loss.

  • What are you talking about?? Obamas was right. The nazis killed more than 3 MILLION!!! people before hitler was defeated. Do you call it successfully intervened??! Successful would have meant to stop Hitler befoer he could do so much harm to the world!!

  • Did you know Barack Obama is blood related to the Bush family and Dick Cheney. Another interesting fact is that nearly every us president before has also been blood related. Does make you wonder.

  • The conception that the U.S. has an obligation to interfere only with Western genocides seems obviously racist when stated, but is at work in many decisions. There atrocities occurring around the world, from Zimbabwe to North Korea, many of which the public knows almost nothing about.

Dharfur stands out as the stage for by far the largest scale genocide today. Unknown hundreds of thousands have already died, and many more lost their homes. It's time to stop ignoring the unsightly poor and act.

  • As dudeman said, the holocaust occurred not in spite of U.S. efforts, but secret to them. The holocaust as we know it was relatively unknown until after WWII, which was NOT primarily about ending the holocaust, but ending German fascism and imperialism. But amiegirl points out even more importantly how many genocides have been and still are ignored. Generally, the poorer the country the less acknowledged the genocide. Columbia is a classic example, where litterally MILLIONS died as a result.

  • Tigger refers to Obama as having a lack of historical knowledge, he says that we did effectively intervene in the holocaust, and says obama said otherwise. The holocaust was ended with the US's help no doubt, but to the millions who died before we did anything, that is where we failed. He is reffering to what is going on right now in darfur, as far as sheer innocent body count it is closely reflected on holocaust in that sense, and if we hadnt of gone to war in Iraq we could have prevented it

  • Sarah Palin looks beautiful wearing "High-heels". But, Sarah Palin reminds me of Dan Qualye for Vice President. Do we really need this Republican Duel to run the country? Obama and Biden are true leaders.....

  • There was a Holocaust in Rowanda, the United States did nothing. There was further ethnic cleansings in Yugoslavia, Pol Pot's killing fields, a massacre of Armenians, of Native Americans, of Tasmanian Aborigines. The United States did nothing.

  • Obamas lack of historical knowledge is incredible. We (The United States of America) did intervene effectively in the Holocaust. Unless his collective "we" refers to some other group he counts himself part of
