Making sure that your camera is not plugged in open LOG FILE VIEWER->MESSAGES (You might have to scroll to bottom). Plug in camera and scan new messages relating to your hardware. Look for something like "usb 3-3: QCM on /dev/video0". The last bit is important /dev/video0. You need to tell VLC that this is your video device name. I also had to change capture mode to Video for Linux. Most of the drivers in Linux are 'built-in' and only graphics cards require 'special' drivers e.g. for 3D
