Peter Roach is Emeritus Professor of Phonetics at Reading University. He is also the author of 'English Phonetics and Phonology', the fourth edition of which was published by Cambridge University Press in March 2009.

Here, Peter Roach introduces the ToBI system for transcribing and analysing intonation, explaining how it was developed.

This lecture was recorded at the 11th Seminar on English Phonetics, hosted by the Phonetics Group Chile at UMCE, Santiago, in 2006. Our thanks to the Phonetics Group Chile for allowing us to use this material.

  • I really needed information like the one presented here. Thank you!

  • I have recently started to use the TOBI. I find it hard to tell the H* tone from the L+H* sometimes. I used to think that a steep rise was a sure proof evidence of L+H*, but sometimes that´s not so. And the break index tier can be very, very subjective.

Thanks for posting this helpful video. I do hope there is a follow-up.
