Between 1968 and 1977, the type of care offered by the Center became too diverse. The lack of focus created inefficiency and resulted in financial chaos.
In 1977, the center hired Carol Gray to serves as Volunteer Coordinator. Not unlike Mattie's divine calling, Carol knew upon arrival that she had found her niche' in ministry to children and their families. Within months she was promoted to Assistant Administrator.
The Center continued to produce a negative cash flow, however, and the management saw no option but to close the facility. Albert Gray, Carol's brother, was hired to complete the 1977-1978 school year as Administrator and then close the facility.
Once on board, Albert was able to make some immediate and sweeping operational changes which resolved the Center's budgetary problems and kept the doors open. Now a skilled pediatric nursing facility, the hospital focuses on meeting more specialized medical needs.
In June of 1995, The Children's Center received a $9.77 million grant from the Donald W. Reynolds Foundation to fund the new facility in full. Construction of the new facility began in 1996. The entire 82,00 square foot complex was completed in late 1998.
