Biosphere X is an architectural design studio focused on the politics of environmentalism. Projects began by exploring ongoing debates about the ethics of land use practice through the ideologies of two camps: hunters and hippies. The testing ground for these issues is Biosphere 2, a 3.14 acre structure 30 miles outside of Tucson, Arizona, that housed seven 'biospherians' from 1991-1992 in an enclosed and self-sustained environment. Today, Biosphere 2 is poised to confront Biosphere 1 (Earth): while the structure is operated by the University of Arizona as an ecological research lab, its 1600 acre site is currently slated for residential, commercial, and resort developments by its owner, CDO Ranching & Development. Projects in this studio offer a broad range of speculative design proposals for the site's future as an open-ended exploration of the political, social, and environmental affects of land use strategies.
