Plot Summary: "Charlie Wilson's War" is the true story of how a playboy congressman, a renegade CIA agent and a beautiful Houston socialite joined forces to lead the largest and most successful covert operation in history. Their efforts contributed to the fall of the Soviet Union and the end of the Cold War, with consequences that reverberate throughout the world today. Oscar® winners Tom Hanks, Julia Roberts and Philip Seymour Hoffman team with Academy Award®-winning director Mike Nichols and screenwriter Aaron Sorkin to bring George Crile's best-selling book to the screen.

Charlie Wilson (Hanks) was a bachelor congressman from Texas who had a habit of showing up in hot tubs with strippers and cocaine. His "Good Time Charlie" exterior, however, masked an extraordinary mind, a deep sense of patriotism and a passion for the underdog, and in the early 1980s the underdog was Afghanistan—which had just been brutally invaded by the Russians.

Charlie's longtime friend and patron and sometime lover was Joanne Herring (Roberts), one of the wealthiest women in Texas and a virulent anti-communist. Believing the American response to the Russian invasion was anemic at best, she prods Charlie into doing more for the Mujahideen (Afghan freedom fighters).
The weeks to come will determine just how severe a blow Benazir Bhutto's death is to Pakistan, but debate over Washington's role in the run up to this tragic day will continue well beyond that. Even as the smoke still lingered in Rawalpindi, President Bush demanded that those responsible for Bhutto's death be caught and punished. "The United States strongly condemns this cowardly act by murderous extremists who are trying to undermine Pakistan's democracy," Bush told reporters in Crawford, Texas, where he had arrived Wednesday to begin a long New Year's holiday. "Those who committed this crime must be brought to justice."

But there are some who think the Bush Administration is not without blame. Hussain Haqqani, a former top aide to Bhutto and now a professor at Boston University, thinks the U.S., which has counted Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf as a key ally against terrorism since 9/11, bears some of the responsibility. "Washington will have to answer a lot of questions, especially the Administration," he says. "People like me have been making specific requests to American officials to intervene and ask for particular security arrangements be made for her, and they have been constantly just trusting the Musharraf Administration." U.S. officials said they were leery of intervening in another nation's internal affairs, and didn't want to give Bhutto Washington's imprimatur.

  • Tom u so stupid if u saying russians were defeated in Afgan

  • (DinoPal) is that not the truth? I am not saying that it is, but I will say that is the story we are taught here in America. Keep in mind that we are also taught that Christopher Columbus discovered America when their were definitely American Indians. We get all type of misinformation, and the story of the Afghan War has always read in our books as if they pushed back the Russians and won a long war.

  • blacktreemedia The defeate was in Vietnam then Vietkong blust through the gate in Saigon with T-55 and made GI's drop helos from ships to make rooms for escape. In Afganistan Soviets just left, couse the war was pointless due huge support of the US. But even after Soviets left - THE PROMOSCOW GOVERNMENT WAS IN POWER FOR THREE MORE YEARS BEFORE US SUPPORTED TALIBAN FINNALY MANAGE TO CAPTURE CITY. Tom called that defeat???????

  • DinoPal, I think everybody has heard that the US supported the Taliban, but for some reason, the country is in denial of that. We know it to be true, yet we want to believe that these guys woke up and hated America from birth because we are the 'Land of the Free'. I am going to do some fact checking on your story, honestly, I really don't know what happened in Afghanistan, I definitely never figured out what happened in Vietnam. The truth is elusive.

  • Tom Hanks is the man!!

  • To denbenenki- The Afghanistans defeated the Russians with American Stinger Missles. Which Charlie provided. The Communist party went under after the Afghan defeat. The Republicans are trying to place the blame squarely in Charlie's court. However, Reagan Took Full Credit for the defeat of the Soviet Union. Even though it was Charlie's Doing. Which is it! Reagan or Charlie won the Cold War? You Republicans can't have it both ways!

  • @DinoPal Didn't the Russians have to leave Afghanistan because of the insurgency?

  • imagine getting paid a fortune and as part of your job you had to grab Julia Roberts ass. I wish I had done drama.

  • America follows illuminati who says : Blame it on the muslims....Im a muslim and i hate afghanistan because of their stupid brainz....

  • Put the Full Movie up on YouTube!

Let the audience decide for ourselves.

What's to lose - except viewers to Hulu?

  • Hanks had help with this one big time. Charlie Wilson for starters was in interesting character so that was there before a book or screen play was written. Hanks didn't even bother to mention he had one of the best screen and teleplay writers ever writing for him and we did defeat the russians in afgan i don't know who said that below but we did and we did screw up afterwards not rebuilding afgan after the russons were out. imagine the world today if we did. more proof on reagan being stupid.

  • and humiliated by his highly imaginative opponents. See this film free @ Movie Watcher [dot] US
