Yes Shanghai is quite developed but it's not a *country* yet. Remember the USSR wouldn't fall apart without external help.

  • @TheSalmonfan Well, I don't feel any responsibility to decide whether or not China should be broken up into several smaller countries. I'm happy to let the citizens of China figure that one out for themselves.

By the way, Shanghai *is* developed.

  • @asterisk911

Don't you feel you have responsibilities for humanity, people's well being, and world peace?

That's partially true. But after the breakup, countries such as Shanghai will probably become developed countries within a year, and poor small countries in the interior west will become easier to manage according to your logic so they too will have better chances of having a better quality of life after such downsizing, right ?

  • @TheSalmonfan I did. I disputed your "So you think..." linkage between my previous comment and your inference. Your inference didn't follow from my comment.

As for whether China "should be" broken up, that decision is above my paygrade. But it would have no bearing on the fact that, say, Shanghai is very rich and modern, and a typical inland village is very poor. A break-up wouldn't change that.

  • @asterisk911

How come you're not commenting on what I said ?

  • @TheSalmonfan That doesn't in any way follow from what I said. I simply said that you should compare like to like.

  • @asterisk911

So you think it would be better for China to become 'smaller' coz you believe China is too big? So China should be broken up into 15 or 16 small countries like what happened to the former USSR ?

Btw India is a little poorer than China. Both are poor countries with very low per capita GDPs.

  • @TheSalmonfan The people who provided most of the capital, the vast majority of the entrepreneuership, and virtually all of the labour in building HK's economic miracle (chiefly 1950s-1970s) were specific Chinese, mostly immigrants. They were not random collections of DNA.

Nor can building universal prosperity in a country of more than 1 billion be compared to doing it in a tiny coastal enclave. Compare China with India: the latter a former British colony, yet much poorer than China.

  • @asterisk911

Then how come the mainland Chinese who carry the same type of DNA were not able to do same kind of 'work' or achieve same kind of prosperity like HK has achieved ? HK is already a developed country, while China is poorer than several African countries on a per capita basis.

  • They should have given it to Taiwan, a spit in the face to those commie dogs.
