In design, people often seek examples for inspiration. However, current example-finding practices are ad hoc. This paper introduces exploratory techniques for finding relevant and inspiring design examples. These interactions are manifest in d.tour, which comprises a style based search interface, a database of designs, methods for extracting design features, and a server that processes queries and recommends designs. An experiment found a high correlation between human style ratings and the results of d.tour's algorithms. A second experiment found that professional designers preferred examples found with d.tour to those found with web search engines.
