A drop of glycerin falls 2.5 meters and impacts on a shallow layer of ethanol on a glass plate. Initially a "bowl" of glycerin rises which then breaks up in a beautiful grid pattern due to the marangoni instability of the bowl surface. Filmed at 2900 fps.

Filmed at the Physics Department at the Technical University of Denmark (DTU). Credits Anders Andersen and Teis Schnipper.

For details see "Crown breakup by Marangoni instability" (2006), Thoroddsen et. al, J. Fluid Mech. vol. 557, p.63-72.
