My thoughts are that this part of the film encapsulates the flaw of the main character "supertramp". He lacks the wisdom of Leonard Knight (wisdom to love people back) and can never accept the love of others.

They weren't scripted at all. That whole scene was improv. Sean Penn had a 5 page script that he wanted Leonard to rehearse and memorize. Leonard told him no and suggested that he "just send his actors over, film it, and he'll just treat them as he treat anyone else." So thats what they did. They shot the whole scene there in about just under three hours. That's what Leonard told me happened the day they filmed. Interestingly, Leonard doesn't remember Christopher McCandless.

makes sense. i found out about the slab through the movie and went there to check it out myself, but my friends and i didnt bother anyone and alot of people there were more than hospitable.

Actually yes. The movie drew too much unneeded attention, and was an embarrassment to the local authorities. At least that's what a Niland local told me.

Why do you say that? Because the slabbers want to maintain as low a profile as possible and the movie drew too much attention to it?

Sorry, he passed away a few years ago. Just went out there for the first time a few weeks ago, pretty amazing place.
