I find it quite annoying sometimes when a lot of domain names are taken, but are not being used at all. I remember once trying to set up a website using my last name, but that domain name was taken by someone, and was not being used. I feel like inactive websites should be somehow made available again to the mass market once it has been inactive for quite sometime. Maybe have the hosts send an email saying the website is in demand and if not used, should be given up.

With the dominance of Google, many people no longer just type their topic of interest into the browser hoping they will get a relevant website. So, since something like flu.com is not attached to any specific brand name, why would it be so valuable? It also made me wonder if when they purchased all of these domain names they did any domain tasting to see if they would be more or less successful than other domains they had purchased.

This video reminded me of an article I read regarding the consumer packaged good company, P&G, selling off a lot of domain names they had purchased years ago. They initially purchased a massive amount of generic domain names such as ‘flu.com’ which they eventually realized they had absolutely no use for. Some of the domain names were valued to sell for a lot of money, which made me wonder why. (flynn, pt 1)...

Using a domain name that can be associated with many other popular things can actually be an effective strategy bc you can catch people who wish to go to other websites but "accidentaly" land on yours. Doing so, you have to make sure that your landing pages are catchy, simple, as welll as aesthetically pleasing so that people want to explore your website further. This way, you can steal customers who initially wanted to navigate other websites but were caught off guard after landing on yours.

I think that to find out the domain name of any company, the person need to consider to pronounce what the domain name (to avoid offending anyone), and research the market (especially if a site is targeted to a specific country, the person need to ensure that the words used are understandable and "clean" - for example, cook island's Google website as GOOGLE. CO .CK).

It's not only important to have a domain name that is easy to remember but also to have a domain name that has good international marketability. As international business is increasing, companies should also consider what the name translation would be in other languages. For example: Pocari Sweat which is a popular Japanese sports drink. If the company were to expand in North America people would not buy the product as its associated with sweat.

The Google test is a good tool, however, I believe that it is also important to conduct the test on other search engines as well. Since most search engines use different algorithms, different search engines will provide results that might not have shown up on Google. In addition, the point about how you write your domain name is also important, it is vital that the domain name does not spell something else, it could negatively effect the brand name, and quality of the website!

Having a poor domain name is sometimes easy to remember. I remember a pizza pizza radio commercial where the announcer said "call 1-800-3636, not 1-800 free sex free sex free sex. This made the number much easier to remember.

Extending on your point on the marketing issues involved with Domain Names where you point out the negative spin-off type domain names such as "walmartsucks". To avoid negative PR, companies could also try to purchase those domain names which could be in turn used to negatively impact your company. Alternatively, a company could also choose to purchase domain names in which a rival company or competitor could potentially use against your company.

Good point Barker - many companies do, in fact, buy these "negative domains", but if you wanna slam someone you can be very creative and change the spelling slightly
