Explore the underground world of Middle Eastern hardcore rock and heavy metal, a scene thriving in bedrooms and basements away from the periodic condemnations of governments and religious rulers. Metal music has been trickling into countries like Jordan, Iran and Lebanon from the West since the late 1980s, when bands like Metallica and Black Sabbath introduced power chords to the Middle East. By the 1990s the voices of authority tried to stem the musical tide in a series of Satanic Metal crackdowns that saw, in some cases, metal fans imprisoned and the music banned. But the metal movement has survived that and is still growing, finding fans amongst Middle Eastern youth who are searching for music that speaks to their experience. This is the story of heavy metal and Ithe Middle East. Featuring Nervecell, Bilocate, Betzefer, Orphaned Land, Oath to Vanquish and TarantisT.

  • No actually music is NOT forbidden in Islam and the Arab world and has never been. Only certain idiots translate it (for their own benefits) as something thats forbidden by the religious books.

Music has always been encouraged there.

As for metal music, it's been forbidden in certain arab/islamic countries for satanic-related reasons. Politicians trying to force people into forgetting how they're being fucked by politics on a daily basis, keeping them busy with "satanism" and all that bull.

  • Viva Iranian people in the streets protesting against stupidity.

  • @walidch well then rock n roll

  • @march23s of course!!! Metal is just music and there's millions of Muslim musicians all over the world, since the dawn of time. However, many Arab countries impose a ban on Metal for political and brain-washing purposes but it has nothing to do with Metal & Islam.

  • @sheqse of course

  • @walidch so even if you're muslim, you're allowed to liscen to metal?

  • Dubai Metalheads have taken too much advantage of how much more freedom they have than other regions... we aren't united... 2 years ago I could flash the horns at any Metalhead and Id get one back in return... now they'd give you a weird look... they're all in packs now thinking each of them are better than the other...

  • it was amazing day !

  • To ONLYHSV:

Yes many oppose it from a cultural point of view, and they have the right to, but none fought it, it was by government and religious provocation, propaganda and paranoia instigation that the society became scared and violent against Metal music.

As for the lyrics, I don't see anyone objecting to horror movies!! Metal is a form of art and have a dark side, just like horror movies, if someone sing about the devil and picture a satanic view, it doesn't mean they are devil worshipers

  • The FACTS are that the Church is the one that started to fight Metal before Muslims ever thought about it, not that there is much difference between any religion to my opinion. Pakistan and Iran are all part of the Middle East politically, and I would have preferred it to be called Heavy Metal in the middle east. THERE IS a misconception in the West about the area, this is all what I am saying.
