Shannon Gillen of DOORKNOB COMPANY, www.shannongillen.com This is rehearsal footage of 'The Last Party of the Brain'. Inspired by neuronal function and my fathers stroke experience, The Last Party of the Brain will explore the performance space as the last viable platform in a brain that is experiencing degeneration and will seek to apply the sensory conditions of a left hemispheric stroke to live performance. The work begins as four errant directives/performers arrive to participate in the final events. These directives encompass specific aspects of the brains memory, as well as the objectives to arouse, orient, detect and execute a solution to the increasing trauma. Attuning the performers to a growing sense of serenity and a loss of self, the work is juxtaposed against a sound collage of Modulated Offset Harmonic (MOH) Frequencies and music from the 1920s. Investigations on the boundaries of the body, episodic and semantic memory, depth perception, the inability to carry linear thought, and a fleeting sense of familiarity serve to develop the movement language of this work. The Last Party of the Brain is a swan song, a neuronal death rattle, a last ditch effort and simply the best party this season. My thanks to Xan Burley, Janna Diamond and Stephanie Miracle.
