  • There seems to be some confusion as to who wrote this song....and we need to get to the bottom of that and give credit where credit is due.

But.......This version by MMM......is absolutely incredible.

Buckwheats version takes me right out there on I-10 somewhere between Sonora and El Paso....with nothing but jackrabbits and tumbleweeds.......

  • @catndryer "Texas Morning" was written by Michael Murphey & Boomer Castleman.

  • 5 O'clock in a Texas Morning was written by Michael Martin Murphey.

  • Stan is right. B.W. Stevensen recorded "Texas Morning" at some point, but it was written by Murphey and Boomer Castleman.

  • Back when he was just Michael Murphey, he wrote some damn good songs.

  • I saw him at East Texas State University in 1977 and he played this. Wish he'd stayed with what he was doing and stayed away from the cowboy stuff.

  • @wdchefdave56 USAF Lackland AFB, July 21, 1971. I was the first woman from Creek County, OK to enlist in the military.

I thought Ricky Nelson was the performer, but I can't find his rendition at all. Maybe I just mistook MM for Ricky.

It was the best experience of my life, it was the worst experience of my life. I was two weeks past my 18th birthday and desperate to help my family out. My Dad had broken his back in a work injury. I was the oldest of 6 kids.

  • @MajorHoolihan

I thank you for your service, and a good ear for music.

That must have been good times mixed with bad times.

    I hope all is well.

(And, may I ask what branch?)

I'm betting on Navy or Marines.

Dad was in the Army , so take no offense if my guess is wrong.

I do love this song and got to eat with him and B. W. Stevenson a long time ago in a small restaurant in Dallas.

  • @wdchefdave56 I heard this song shortly becofe shipping out for basic training. Every morning, at 5:00 I'd be standing in formation, watching the sun start to rise...and I had come a long, long way...

  • Michael Nesmith did it first... I heard it around 5:00 in a Texas morning

    I love all versions.

Check them out... it's good fer ya!.

  • Where did this come from? Looks like the original from Austin City Limits.

  • I saw him at that same concert at East Texas State. I could not agree with you more.

  • I saw Michael at SMU in the early 70's . The Texas Trilogy.Fromholtz, Willis Allen and Michael. They played for most of the night!! I really liked Michael during this time. Lately he doesn't do much for me.

  • MMM is one helluva singer. Went to a concert he did at the Austin Municiple Auditorium around 1973. They had a power problem....and he just sat on the edge of the stage and played and sang without ampliphication for nearly an hour. Thanks for the good times Michael.
