Ancient Lava Tube Exits Over the Water (Big Island, Hawaii)

We had a very unique experience on The Big Island's southwestern shore. Hiking south along the coastal trail from Pu'uhonua o Hōnaunau, we found the lava tube mentioned in our guidebook. It was a tough crawl through the center of it, but once we reached the end, we had a unique perch.

The lava tube ends abruptly over the water. It was about 20 feet or so down to the water. And the water looked deep enough for us to jump. However, we did not indulge.

While we stood there snapping some photos and taping our experience, a small tour boat came along and slipped into a cave below us.

I was amazed by that rocky "beach" more than I was amused, but in retrospect, it is kind of funny. There was all this black lava rock, then the white crushed coral sand, and then the sterotypical coconut palm trees - BUT NO water! Well, the water is off-camera to the left.

Awesome! Lucky you getting to see it before they filled it in and all! It kind of reminds me of something else but I'll let you all figure that out!

Why did they seal it? how do they seal it?

the whipped top of a lava tube is created... well lava is very viscous and it drips like goo... so the top is created by drips offs solidifing when cooling.

i went to mexico cordoba and i saw a super volcano cold ancient lava tubes on the air it was cool
