@buymeamic N66/5N66M/76N6 Clam Shell low level early warning radar, is an unconventional frequency modulated continuous wave design, using a split antenna arrangement with a large beak to prevent spillover from the transmitter. Quoted performance figures include the detection of targets with an RCS as low as 0.02 square metres, at speeds of up to 1,400 kt, with a bearing resolution of 1 degree, velocity resolution of 9.3 kt and range resolution of 2.15 NM.

This thing have no FLAP LID so Patriot have no ability to engage Tomahawk class missles. Enough said.

@sakoshooter48 That's basically what I said in my last post, I couldn't think of anything else tactical lasers would be used for. But I can see what you mean; the implications for the global military market will be far reaching indeed, everyone will be rushing to make their aircraft and missiles laser proof as well as working to develop their own lasers.

@sakoshooter48 Something other than missile defence, anti-aircraft or anti-mortar systems? What do you have in mind?

@DeathToChaosGods They don't need to show off thier SAM systems. Too many aircraft with stars and stripes on them have been removed from the sky by them. Still, for every measure, there will always be a countermeasure! Going to be a very interesting time as the USAF's airborne laser platform comes on line. I can only imagine the controversy it will cause the first time it gets used for something other than missile defence.

@sakoshooter48 I don't think its necessarily overkill, obviously an anti-air missile system has to be faster than its target, but an experienced pilot can evade the missile with countermeasures and skillful maneouvring. The faster the missile can close with the target, the less time the target has to detect and respond. But I agree the S-400/500 program seems more like an ABM system than a SAM, then again maybe the Russians are just showing off.

@DeathToChaosGods Technically speaking, I believe, and so do many of my colleques, that the S-400/500 series of missiles is a fabulous technical front for a theater ABM. I think it is on parody with THAAD as I believe that any ground to air SAM that has an impulse speed of Mach 12 is..........overkill? It is interesting to me how we design systems to defeat Russian SAM systems, they design the systems to overcome our technology. Fun and never ending! I get Janes anually too!
