  • I think I may need to apologize here. My source for the lyrics calls it "A traditional Scottish song", but in a discussion on the Mudcat Cafe site the best information anyone can come up with is that it first appears in a 3 volume work entitled "Songs of the North" by Harold Boulton, which was published between 1885 and 1926.

    Either way, the difference between "Although she is untrue" and your rewrite "I doubt she is untrue" materially changes the song in my opinion
