Yeah but remember Optimus did come back later and retook his roll as leader. And that kind of did happen because Hot rod became Rodimus with the power of the matrix. Anyway after he lost the matrix he went back to Hot rod again.

What if they hadn't killed optimus in the movie? What if Hot Rod had died in the movie, and Optimus spent the entire movie on a quest of finding out who he really is as leader, and hot rod, and at the end hot rod's spirit would combine with him and they'd create the ultimate creature. That's what the movie should've been. Instead they had to kill the most famous cartoon character live, just because of one punk ass nerd named Hot Rod.
