The concensus seems to be that Boitano won the competition on the strength of the last figure...a Back Outside change loop.

  • At what level of skating did skaters start doing figures?

  • @jfluter In the old days, you started figures as soon as you finished a BASIC skating skills group class, about the time you started private lessons. THere was a 8 level testing schedule that pretty much took a lifetime to pass. 8th test skaters appeared on TV, but all skaters were doing easier figures throughout their young careers.......it was an achievement to make a 5th test, 8th tests were rather rare.....best wishes

  • When figure skating was really FIGURE skating. I so remember being on the ice each morning at 5:30 a.m. for patch sessions, followed by freestyle, followed by patch, followed be freestyle and so on...

  • I do so know the routine myself!! Funny how so many images and memories stay with you. I can still see in my mind, particular days at skating....certain figures........thanks for commenting, best wishes

  • @julphin Memories of all those earlier patch sessions. Now I do ice dancing as my jumps sucked but my figures were great. Now its just a jumping contest.

  • @DeeAndDee They do have a problem with all the programs looking so much alike. Not a lot of creativity out there......best wishes and good luck with your ice dancing.

  • @k9henrydog Thanks for the info! I would love to give some of the easier figures a try, if I can ever find the patterns.

  • I'm glad they've tried to introduce some elements of figures into moves, but even with this addition it isn't the same thing. There is no retracing of the pattern. Proper figure eights are hard enough, retracing is extremely difficult. Skaters are losing more and more control. What does holding a spin for 20 seconds prove against what was shown in this video? The sport is going the wrong way.

  • Thanks for this.

  • Sounds like a wonderful training day! but i would have a heck of a time changing back and forth between figure and free style blades! as you get older, the hardest thing is to bend over and unlace those hundred or so strands down there!! lol patch is quite entrancing...and you can do it into your old age!!! there is something spiritually mystical about loops!!!! i just love em!! best wishes....nice to hear from you!!!
