The Indian Air Force shows its full combat power capability during the 'Vayu Shakti-2010' at the Pokhran firing ranges

The Indian Air Force for the first time displayed its combat power capacity at night in a massive display Sunday at the defence air range in Pokhran. Close to 70 aircraft, including frontline fighters like the Sukhoi 30s, Mirage 2000, Jaguars and MIG-21s, besides attack helicopters participated in the event at the range in northern Rajasthan state.

The display included a demonstration of the Airborne Warning and Control System (AWACS), which monitored the entire exercise and an unmanned aerial vehicle that streamed live video images of target destruction.

Mock radar sites, tanks, terrorist camps, runway and convoys were among the targets set for the pilots to destroy.

An Indian Air Force (IAF) statement earlier said the Vayu Shakti 2010 (Air Power) would be "a mammoth fire power demonstration showcasing the operational capabilities of the IAF by day, dusk and night."

The demonstration was a collective display of skills and accuracy in weapon delivery by pilots at the end of their training year, the statement said.

It said the exercise would aid commanders and planners to gain better insight into the potential and deployment capabilities of aerial weapons.

Pakistan had been given prior information of the exercise according to an agreement between the two countries.

The Pokhran range is close to India's border with Pakistan.
