  • Whats the cheapest mig you would recommend for auto body work?

I noticed a lot of cheaper migs burn right through sheet metal, i just don't know where to draw the line with my frugalness.

  • @280zx2by2 You should be able to get good results with almost anything as long as it's built properly. I recommend .024" wire and 75/25 argon/co2 gas. Anything bigger will burn too hot. Flux core is definitely out. Set the voltage and feed as low as it will go and still sound right (sort of like bacon frying). A lot of people use Harbor Freight welders. I've never used one myself, but it's hard to beat a good Hobart or Lincoln. Also keep the gun moving on that thin stuff.

  • In that case I'll never grow up.

  • XMTs are awsome, got a trailblazer 302 desiel for makin the big bucks as a rig welder

  • Trailblazers are nice welders. Of course, all Miller welders are nice welders ^_-. Good luck with it.

  • There's only two brand of welders that for the title of "you get what you pay for." Miller and Lincoln! At all costs, AVOID the specially made Lincolns that are made for home depot and big box stores. Those stores only sell the stepped down cheaper models. Buy quality online or at a welding store. Lincoln's have better service for their old model units that aren't in production anymore. Miller isn't too friendly.

  • @280zx2by2 I've had a Harbor Freight model for the last couple years. I have the 110amp 220v "dual" flux and gas model. It has plenty of power, but the torches are horrible...I'm about to order my third torch. I haven't had trouble welding sheet metal with flux core wire. I'd like to upgrade to some miller equipment like @thelightningstalker is showing in this video.

  • It is the welder to get.... but if you gotta send it out to get fixed.....your work comes to a fucking hault!!!

  • @TheLightningStalker Thanks, I went and looked at some Hobart, Lincoln, and the cheap Harbor Freight ones today but Im thinking about just waiting until one pops up used on craigslist for cheap.
