This is the story of Sister Luke, from the time she enters the convent until she chooses to leave the Sisterhood. She comes from a well off family and her father is a prominent surgeon. He cannot quite understanding her calling but he is a loving father and cares for her, regardless of her decision. As a novitiate, she has difficulty swallowing her pride and is an excellent student, particularly in the science of tropical medicine. Having completed her studies, her hopes of going to the Belgian Congo are initially dashed. When she is finally assigned there, she finds that she is working in the European rather than the native hospital. There she meets the brilliant and hardworking Dr. Fortunati who helps her overcome a bout with tuberculosis. Having returned to the motherhouse, she has difficulty accepting the neutrality of her order as the Second World War rages and chooses to leave the Order permanently.
@Prancer1231 Actually all unmarried women, whether they are nuns are not, live longer and are more mentally stable than married women. However, the opposite is true for men - married men live longer and are more stable than their single counterparts. Men need women more than women need men which is why Western society is set up to force the economic dependency of women on men. Women rule and men know it!

@Chocolateluvr1987 There's many people who hide out in ordinary life. I would imagine a person wouldn't last long in religious life if they are there for anything but faith and vocation. Living with people for life you don't necessarily like or will clash with is probably more of challenging experience. Most religious, esp Catholics, are not all hidden in buildings living on a cloud.

The Catholic Church doesn't teach evil but men and women have free will to choose to do evil or good. A great many call themselves Catholic but are only so in name only.

@starquant saw it and thank you for showing it to me. It makes me wonder, why people seek solace in religion tho. Is it just a modern day place, where folks ( Men AND Women, thanks for your reference) , can do these things in private under the guise of religion?.
