"Only A Rose"
Sung by Richard Crooks
From the All Talking Picture
"The Vagabond King" (1930)
Richard Crooks had a great voice but made far too few recordings of popular music. Most of his output consisted of the typically lifeless overly pretentious classical music.
It's always a delight to hear Crooks. Like Tauber, whatever he sang was elevated to the level of an art song. Much the same could be said for John McCormack. Thank you for this.

Lovely recording- Crooks fine tenor and a wonderful old love song. And I was under the impression he had made many popular recordings, esp. the Foster series. Thankfully we do have recordings like this and Utube to keep his voice alive for new listeners. And people such as yourself who take the trouble to post these songs of a wonderful tenor and gentleman. And upper register and head tones aside, I could listen to him all day. And have.

Richard Crooks had a magnificient tenor voice, with, as you can hear, a mixed upper register. Maybe was he more familiar with the Metropolitan Opera !
