We are reading Dear Mr. Henshaw in class where the main characters dad is a truck driver. We called my dad on Skype who is also a truck driver after preparing several questions we had as we were reading the story. This allowed my students to gain a much deeper understanding of the story and to have a professional answer their questions directly.

  • Nice example! Hey, I'm trying to learn about using Skype in the classroom. Is there anything you can tell me about a) what works; b) what the obstacles/challenges are; c) what you would dream for to help you do it?

  • @pskiltonsylvester thanks for the comment! The first challenge/obstacle I had was to find a purpose for using Skype. In this case, it made sense to use it because of the immediate connection we could make to the story and the truck driver we spoke to, which was my dad. Other obstacles are of course the equipment and the timing of setting up a meeting. Thanks again.

  • Where's the rest?

  • @pattypopping sorry there is only that little bit of the video. When I had posted this video a few years back I didn't think the rest of the video was worth posting.

  • @jazzymiles1 Yeah! One of the questions in the Olympics did not make sense!!!! It was "What did Leigh do with the $20 his dad gave him? My team answered supplies for a lunchbox alarm!!!! But they said it was wrong and the answer was wires!!!!
