The concept of Artificial Life has been progressed forward by several artists, they have revolutionized the way we view and conceptualize it. It is the study of art that focuses life, its course and its evolution. For my project, I wanted to show my interpretation of Artificial Life;I decided to create a stop motion animation that focuses on Artificial Life.My project involves three balls of play dough each a different color (black, green, yellow) and their interaction with each other. In each frame the playdough moves displaying its independence as a being, its ability to function on its own. The play dough then begins to evovle into a new being, instead of three it becomes one abstract being. The abstarct being then transforms into hands, each a diiferent shape from the last.
The concept of Artificial Life is filled with many different artist protraying it. The artist that inspired me in doing my project is Christa Sommerer and her piece A-Volve. In her piece A-Volve , Christa Sommerer allows visitors to create virtual creatures and then interact with them in a water-filled glass pool. These three-dimensional creatures become alive and begin to swim in the water of the pool. The way that the creatures move is related to the way they were designed. I wanted to model my final project after this, by creating abstarct shapes with the play dough and then allowing it to interact I feel that I interpreted the concept of Artificial Life. The playdough appeared to have its mind, it interacted with itself on its own.
In creating my animation,I used playdough and a digital SLR camera to record the images. I then collected the images and imported them into final cut pro. Some of the obstacles that I had to overcome when creating the stop motion were the shooting of the actual animation. Stop motion animation takes patient and steadey hands, while shooting the animation I would sometimes move the stage that it was being shot on causing slight movement in the frame. The animation took eight hundred and twenty-nine images and four and half hours to produce.
