Please forgive my lame video publishing skills...I was in a bit of a hurry. I am looking for a clip of David Bowie from either the late 70's or very early 80's. Bowie was laying in a coffin singing, yet more like wailing. As a little kid, it sort of frightened me. I have talked with several David Bowie fans and none seem to remember this clip. I found one reference to it on the net, just a one liner about "Bowie singing in a sarcophagus." I seem to remember it being from the television show "Fridays" which only ran for 3 seasons. The other reference on the net said it was from SNL, which according to the SNL archives and the Fridays archives, is non-existent.

So, please, if anyone has a copy of this, I don't give a damn if its on Betamax, give me a shout!

Thanks a bunch...

  • What you mean is a 1979 Saturday Night Live (SNL) performance, featuring Bowie framed in a suit very similar to the one Klaus Nomi (on backing vocals) would immortalize, later on.

I think the setlist was "The Man Who Sold the World" & "TVC 1 5".

To learn more about Klaus Nomi (and the 1979 Bowie collaboration) check out the documentary THE NOMI SONG. Or "The Nomi Song Trailer" here on You Tube.

  • @LunaSeaSane Actually, it was NOT the suit he wore during "Man Who Sold the World." It was indeed a coffin. I am VERY familiar with the 1979 SNL performances. Thanks for your reply though ;)

  • He was in a Green Coffin standing upright, face and hands showing ?

  • @genalof YES! Do you know anything about this???!!! This is exciting!

  • The Hunger?

  • @ILikeABandCalldOasis

Nope, it wasn't "The Hunger", although that was a nice scary piece of Bowie! ;) No, now from the other people who remember exactly what I was talking about it was a song that was aired live, but never made it into syndication at SNL...it was more than likely aired at the same time as the NOMI appearance in 1979 with Bowie. Thank you SO much for replying though! ;) sanz

  • Likely the BBC play... Cannot remember name? Sure you can find it somewhere mate

  • I recall that Bowie was carried onto the stage by 2 Men & placed in an up-rite position in front of a mike.

Never moving once."except for his head & arms".

I also recall it being more like a "Pin Striped Sarcophagus" than a Coffin & I recall the song as being "The Man Who Sold The World".

  • If it was 1980, maybe it was a performance of Ashes to Ashes. I've never heard of this performance on TV of Bowie in a coffin, but that would make sense. Putting Major Tom to rest.

    Shake

  • I would love to see the David Bowie SNL act where he wears a dress. Hot drag!

  • @jerryewillis I found a bad copy on YT: It's completely out of synch, but still edifying.

  • I think you may refering to the play he did in 1982, BAAL which was broadcast on the BBC

  • I was 9 when Bowie did that SLN performance and it tripped me out - never forgot it... Have yet to see any posting of this performance. I also remember during that show a performance where they did a green screen of Bowie's head over a moving puppet and the puppet kept groping himself... seriously....

  • Bowie may have dropped Nomi because Nomi was stealing the spotlight...i remember seeing them on SNL and Nomi was quite memorable...don't remember a coffin, though...
