Saddam was trying to acquire
"yellow cake", or the materials which it was called, to create
a nuclear weapon from Nigeria. No matter
how absurd it would be for any African
country to figure out what yellow cake
looked like or how to extract it or to possibly transport it
to Iraq without any country knowing about it. 
Not to mention the technology or the building
of such a weapon would be impossible in Iraq
at the time with everyone watching.
