Many thanks to Lancero for the images. Greek police have sealed off Zoniana, a lawless mountain village in the island of Crete that appears to be home to a large marijuana-growing operation. Officers in a raid on the area reported coming under about 1,000 rounds of gunshot. They returned to the village on Tuesday and masked officers were still blocking roads yesterday while more than 200 armed colleagues searched houses. Zoniana is 30km (20 miles) from Heraklion, the island\'s main city. Police said that they found the burnt remains of stolen cash dispensers and vehicles, guns, a drug-processing laboratory and cannabis plantations. They found €15 million (£10.5 million) in the bank accounts of two farmers and €250,000 in cash in a house, which led to the arrest of the owner and his two sons. Eleven other people were arrested.

The operation began after three officers were injured when dozens of gang members ambushed 12 police cars on the drugs raid. (Reuters)
