The question on my mind is "how did his cousin end up in the hospital in the first place". I suspect it was a cut somewhere like the wrist which made the attending ER doctor fear the patient had attempted suicide.
From there we don't know if she really did try to or not, nor what Mr. Smith was told. If there was a legit concern she was being held against her will w/o just cause, why weren't the police called in? The primary lesson to learn from this is don't take matters into your own hands.
