Prof. Tsuneo Akaha, Director of the Center for East Asian Studies at the Monterey Institute of International Studies, talks about the relationship between Russia and East Asian countries, particularly China and Japan. He was puzzled by opinion polls in Russia and Japan which show that 65% of Russians love Japan while only 25% of Japanese have a positive opinion of Russia. According to Prof. Akaha, this is easily explained by the issue of territorial dispute between the two countries. The political relationship between Russia and China is quite different because although they share a long border, there is no territorial dispute between them.
