one of my all time favorite characters (rest of the film is fairly lame, though). coleman had the sexist douchebag market cornered in the early 80s (9 to 5,tootsie, etc). i can still recite most of his dialogue from memory. i think his next lines are "hi there, i was just thinkin' about you". i love the scene where he walks into the ocean to kill himself and then decides against it after being reminded of his new porsche. ...bach wrote the brandenburg concertos (pretty sure that was intentional)
RIP? Hold your horses. He is currently in Boardwalk Empire on HBO. I've been trying to find the scene where he wandering into the surf to end it all as someone tries to convince him to come back. Finally she says "for God's sake, you just bought a new Porsche!", and he instantly spins around to come back. Classic Dabney.
One of the greatest scenes in comedy cinema history!!!! Roots, the book, not that television HS. Only Dabney could have pulled that off. Great Great Movie! RIP Dabney Coleman thanks for the laughter!!!!
@carl22069 unfortunately......I think you're right. Not sure if it was adolescence, the 80's or what, but IMO the 90's was the "beginning of all things suck", and this millenium bullshit has basically affirmed that. all the 20somethings have no clue what "living" in America (quoting James Brown) was/is all about.
ROOTS, da book, not dat television horseshit, WOMEN on beaches! LOL LOL i freakin used 2 love watching this movie over & over as a kid. They don't make comedies like this anymore.
it was never a good movie in terms of acting, even the comedy was somewhat lame, but what I liked about it was it 's a great reflection of the 80's at that time: Cocaine was considered a "mild" drug, the Boomers were beginning their foray into "self help" and other self centered bullshit (as reflected by Coleman's character),exposing alternative underground lifestyles (the gay bar scene),the Boomer's obession with being anti-nuke etc...... you had to be there
Dabney is good in 9 to 5 as well. I do have a weakness for this movie. Chevy is awesome. Caddyshack is his best. This movie and seems like old times are my other favs of his.

Brilliant! Making fun of neuvo-riche douches of the 80's that bred and we endure their offspring today wearing flip flips and shell necklaces.
