The timing for Lewton's sacking might actually work. After Night Watch (well, after the main portion of Night Watch, not the present day parts), Vimes was a highly idealistic copper. Never taking bribes was one of the core lessons Keel/Vimes taught him. If Vimes became captain and only then lost his spirit, Lewton being kicked out for taking a bribe would probably fit with the downward spiral of the watch at that time.
