This is a demo of the Flight of Harmony 'the Sound of Shadows' (aka, f(h) 'SoS') voltage-controlled 'low-fi' digital-delay synthesis module (normally used for audio) in a video-synthesis patch.

The patch consists of two LZX Visionary Waveform Generator (VWG) modules, a Color Video Encoder (CVE), a Video Blending Matrix (VBM) and Voltage Bridge (VB) video synthesis modules. It is a fairly simple patch....

The sawtooth-wave output from VWG1 is patched to a VB(x5)-input (to scale up the video-waveform voltage to audio module levels). The VB(x5) output is patched into the SoS 'signal' input. The 'mix' output of the SoS is then patched to a VB(x0.2) input (to scale the voltage back down to LZX Visionary module levels), and the VB(x0.2) output patched to the CVE Red amt cv-input.

The CVE bias and gain controls are dialed such that the dry sawtooth-wave signal from VWG1 appears red and black. I then proceed to vary the rate, feedback and insert-amt controls of the SoS, paying particular attention to the special "glitch-zone" (rate between 9-10 o'clock, and feedback between 1-2 o'clock), for which the Sound of Shadows module is very well-known in the audio synthesis world. The SoS 'wet-dry' control is really useful for blending video-rate waveforms with their delayed and distorted digital samples (which lose their vertical/line sync timing, but distort in interesting, often chaotic-like ways).

Around 4:00, I begin modulating the SoS with the sawtooth-wave output from VWG2, using one channel of the VBM to attenuate that signal, and then patching it to the rate-amt cv-input of the SoS. This SoS reacts to the surprisingly well. And it results in some pretty complex visual patterns.

While it may not be the most precise module in the video synthesis tool-kit, it certainly can be interesting (and quite a bit of fun). I definitely plan to find additional uses for it in future video synthesis experiments... Anyways, enjoy!
