A collection of my colourisation work, originally recommended in 'Doctor Who Magazine' issue 430, which are now presented with associated sound. Various clips have appeared in my earlier videos, but usually edited and ungraded. This is hopefully the definitive collection. This compendium includes colourisations from 'Invasion', 'The Power Of The Daleks', 'Tenth Planet', 'An Unearthly Child', 'The Aztecs' and 'The Daleks Master Plan', amongst others.

I have no automated process, all the videos are colourised by hand, frame by frame. I capture each individual frame as a still image which I open in Adobe Photoshop to hand colourise. I then re-assemble the hundreds of frames, in order, in my video editing program and render as an avi file. The original PAL video souce is 25 frames a second, so this 5-and-a-half minute video represents over 8000 hand colourised frames.

The 2 short clips of Brian Cant as Kert Gantry from 'The Daleks Master Plan' are unused shots from the 1 minute scene originally colourised for the 'Dalek Tapes' documentary on the 'Genesis of the Daleks' DVD, which was a collaborative work completed with James Russell. All other clips are purely my own work.

I have not included any of my work colourising Jon Pertwee's monochrome episode 'Planet of the Daleks Part 3' as this has subsequently been commercially colourised for DVD release. In total I completed around 4 minutes of the project.

Delighted to say this video has been promoted on the BBC America website. http://www.bbcamerica.com/anglophenia/2012/02/watch-beautifully-colorised-doc...
Glad the Beeb have liked the work :)

  • It might b a rumor, but I've heard that the BBC have asked u to colorize episode 1 of the mind of evil. Is that true?

  • Yes. It was announced in February.

  • Hi BabelColour, I love your colourisations. They look so authentic. Many years ago in an interview with your good self in Nothing At The End Of The Lane you mentioned you wanted to tackle colourising the entire An Unearthly Child episode. Do you still plan to do this? I really hope you do. Be a great way to celebrate the 50th Anniversary.

  • - Good heavens, did you actually read that interview? Haha. Long time ago. If only I had the time to do 'An Unearthly Child', it would be a fantastic project for the annivesary!

  • BabelColour, you are a god.

  • When do you think the BBC will realise that the Doctor Who fans out there would absolutely love it if the old Hartnell/Troughtan adventures would be greatly recieved if they were colourised for the anniversary? Or, at least, start to be so...

  • Fantastic! Congratulations.

  • I can't wait to see it, but I do think colourising the old Hartnell/Troughtan stories should be more important to the Beeb. Not that there is anything wrong with the Pertwee stories, but at least they have been SEEN in colour before.

  • No one said it was. Just prettier :p

  • Absolutely magnificent. I would love to see all these Doctor Who episodes redone in color. Your the man for the job. Thank you !

  • Are u having any luck?
