This is a 9 minute video for people who have had bowel cancer surgery and now have a colostomy. So many people with a colostomy do not know about colostomy irrigation and how it can get freedom and normality back into ones life. This video is an instructional guide on how to do a colostomy irrigation and I hope should be a great help to those who have had bowel cancer surgery.

  • Brian thanks very much for your posting. I will follow your instructions. How severe was the cramping for you when you first started?

    God bless.

  • Hi there.. cramping was not really a problem at all. All one needs to do is to reduce the flow of water a little with the control valve to eliminate any cramping. Make sure water is at about body temperature. Recommended amount of water to use 600 mls to 1000 mls s

  • Once you train your colon for a certain time, how long can it last before it gets untrained if you stop irrigating? ....not sure if I believe in training the bowel, you don’t need to if you irrigate, I just irrigate whenever it suits any time of the day. You can miss days or weeks, to no affect.

How long to train your colon? ....don’t think I ever did, not sure if one needs to but some people might like to irrigate at the same time each day. Once the bowel is empty its empty for 24 to 48 hours.

  • My opinion

    I’ve been irrigating 16 years

What is the biggest negative to irrigating?...none, although I find I don’t do it as often if my mood down, advantages are huge.

How long between irrigation and will I know?... I think it depends on how much I eat, 1 to 2 days ...I just wait until poop comes out, if I am going out I try to always irrigate.

Any long term negative effects for the colon when irrigating?...nothing that I know of, I often irrigate every day if I am going to work etc.

  • Does this work for an Illeostomy?? Or only a colostomy?

  • Check with your doctor I think it only is colostomy

  • Thank you very much for posting this video. I am a nursing student who had difficulty grasping the concept of colostomy irrigation via written text alone. You were very informative and I cannot wait to share what I learned visually from an expert with the class tomorrow. You are a good man for doing what you do with such good humor.
